ביו-הנדסה הינה שדה רב-תחומי המשלב ידע בביולוגיה, פיזיקה, כימיה והנדסה ליצירת כלים חדישים ללימודי ביולוגיה או לעיסוק ברפואה. תחום זה צומח במהירות ומספק רמה חדשה של הבנה של מערכות ביולוגיות, החל בקנה מידה מולקולרי ועד לאורגניזמים שלמים, על ידי יישום גישות אנליטיות וניסויות מבוססות הנדסה.
